Why invest in insulation and energy efficiency?

Because it saves you money!

Insulating your home, upgrading your heating/cooling systems, and using “smart” energy-efficient appliances can lead to substantial savings on your energy bills:

  • Installing a “smart” thermostat can cut your heating and cooling bills by 8% per year.
  • Air sealing and insulating your home should cut your heating costs by at least 15%-20%. Depending on your heating system and what your home needs, it could be a lot more. Middleborough residents we’ve talked to have reported savings of up to 50%.
  • Replacing an old oil furnace or boiler with energy-efficient heat pump technology can save between 20% and 40% of your annual heating costs.
*Dollar estimates are based on projected heating costs of $2627 for an oil-heat home in Massachusetts in 2022-23.  Figures from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources,  https://www.mass.gov/info-details/massachusetts-household-heating-costs#household-heating-costs-for-2022-2023-winter-by-average-consumption-for-each-fuel-

“Six years ago I bought a cottage on Tispaquin Pond, which had been built in 1960 and added on to. It had very little insulation. Previous owners heated with propane, which cost a fortune. We hired a contractor to blow insulation into the walls, which were just 4 inches thick, not 6 inches like new construction. When we installed new siding, we put another 1.5 inches of foam board under that. It brought our heating costs way down. We’ve since added solar and a heat pump. Right now I’m paying only $300/year for my home’s total energy, including our cooking gas!”

DID YOU KNOW?

Half of the average household’s energy cost is spent on heating and cooling.

It’s tough to get excited about spending on insulation you can’t even see. But you’re going to feel it—in your pocketbook and in a warmer house in winter!

That translates into real savings!

You’ll also end up with a warmer (or cooler), more comfortable home.  And insulating your home is the best step we each can take to reduce pollution and carbon emissions in our town!
