Steps to Save on Your Energy Bill
You can get some or even all of your weatherization paid for. It’s not hard, and we can help!
1. Check your income.
HOUSEHOLD SIZE | GROSS ANNUAL INCOME | 4 WEEK GROSS INCOME |
1 | $45,392 | $3,492 |
2 | $59,359 | $4,566 |
3 | $73,326 | $5,640 |
4 | $87,294 | $6,715 |
5 | $101,261 | $7,789 |
See if you qualify to get 100% of your weatherization paid for—that’s right, ALL of it, up to $4,500.
IF YOU ALREADY QUALIFY FOR FUEL ASSISTANCE, then you qualify for the 100% Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). Apply on the South Shore Community Action Council website or call 508-747-7575 x6253. They’ll take it from there.
IF YOU HAVEN’T EVER APPLIED FOR FUEL ASSISTANCE BEFORE, but your income is at or below the guidelines in the chart, then you’ll need to get your income qualified first, and it must be done between November and April. Apply online or call 508-746-6707.
Once you’re income is qualified, then apply for the Weatherization Assistance Program or call 508-747-7575 x6253. There’s often a wait both for callbacks and for scheduling evaluations, so it will take some patience and persistence. But it will be worth it to get your weatherization paid for.
DID YOU KNOW?
You can make a FREE appointment with an independent Abode Energy Management consultant who will talk to you about your house and situation before you invest in weatherization, heat pumps, or solar panels.
While you’re waiting for your assessment, contact Abode, who can help you get started:
2. Sign up for a free assessment and get free stuff.
Don’t qualify above? Sign up for a free energy assessment: 888-772-4242, hea@ene.org, or online. The assessment can qualify you for a 50% weatherization rebate from Middleborough Gas & Electric, with a cap of $1,000 for insulation and $500 for air sealing. If you’re already a low-income rate customer (apply here), you can get a 100% rebate with caps of $1,500 insulation and $750 air sealing. You’ll also get a free Smart Strip, gasket switch, and light bulbs.
3. Make a plan with the assessor.
When the energy assessor comes to your house, you’ll get a roadmap of what you can do to save energy and money over months or years. You’re not obligated to do or spend anything until you’re ready.
Have no fear of what the assessment will find. You’re not alone. Lots of us in town live in old leaky housing that needs weatherization! You can start small and make a plan that works for you.
4. Choose a contractor.
Get contractor estimates, choose a contractor, & schedule the work. In order to get a Middleborough Gas & Electric rebate, you must choose an Abode participating contractor. Tell any contractors you like that aren’t on the list that it’s not hard to apply.
5. Apply for financing.
You can now get a 0% or low-interest loan for energy-saving improvements from two programs started in 2024. To see if either of these work for you, learn more here about their income guidelines—which are much higher than the WAP program—and other requirements. If you need financing, apply as early as you can in this whole process.
6. Apply for your rebate.
Save all receipts or invoices showing what you paid. You have until January 31 to apply for a rebate for anything you spent in the previous calendar year. Call Energy New England at 888-772-4242 with questions.
